Dr. Orfanoudaki Irene MD PhD - Breast diseases

The female breast has been a symbol of femininity, and to date it is an inexhaustible issue that has troubled almost all women at some stage of their lives.

The appearance of the breasts is different in every adult woman.
In some, the breasts are large, in other small ones. In some, their shape is more rounded, while others are more pointed. In many nipples they are large and in other small ones, in some of their color are dark, while in some other colorless.
Such differences are physiological and are due to the different construction of each female body (in its constitution).

But even with the same woman, the two breasts are not exactly the same with each other.
Usually one is larger than the other (in most women the left is bigger than the right). It is estimated that in 50% of women this difference reaches 10%, while in 25% it reaches 20%.

The breast is a secretory gland. Its internal structure can be transformed by various factors such as menstrual cycle, pregnancy or age, differing in any case.

Breast is an instrument complex in its diagnostic approach. The majority of women will experience a finding or a problem in the breast during their lifetime, but only about one in 10 will develop cancer at some point in time.

The examination of the breasts and the diagnosis of their diseases should be part of the preventive control that each woman does to her gynecologist.
It is therefore natural, beneficial, but also essential for all women, the gynecologist, who is the "Doctor of the Woman", to play an important role in the prevention of breast cancer.
Every woman has to start her clinical examination from her 20th birthday.

It is necessary to chew her breasts alone once a month,
After the period (7th -11th day of the cycle).

Women with a pathologic problem in the breast should consult their doctor regarding the frequency of visits.
The first ultrasound scan, if there is no problem in the clinical examination until then, should be done at 30 and continue on an annual basis while the first mammogram should be performed somewhere in the five-year age of 35-40 years.

The benign breast diseases.

About 1 in 5 women at some point in their life experience benign breast disease.
Benign tumors do not appear before puberty and appear rarely after menopause.
Benign tumors often cause discomfort and anxiety in women, but they are not life-threatening, they are not spread out of the breast and are easily cured.

So if a woman is relieved of a bulge, because it is not easy to distinguish goodwill from malignancy, she must necessarily consult her doctor.

The major benign breast conditions are fibroids, lipomas, cysts and papillomas.
